Day 6 in Japan

I felt so tied to wake up in this morning. One reason is I just finished a happy and tired free day. Another is I finally recover from jet lag which is mean I don’t want get up until 9:00.
Today we visited four places and had three lectures about three different companies, which are Kyoto Meat Market, Takara Bio, and Shinshindo.

At Kyoto Meat Market, professor Yoko Niiyama introduced us some basic knowledges about Wagyu, like four main species and the rating standard for the Wagyu. To create a high-quality Wagyu, they improved and took advantage of the traditional species’ genus. They develop and use new feeing technology, improve of shipping and distribution system, and format a system for fair trading and pricing. By doing this, all stakeholders can verify the fairness of the price by comparing the grade and price of beef sold or purchased themselves with price that wholesale market published. Also, Japanese government help to improve the breeding.

Then we viewed an auction about Japanese beef which is very interesting that there was a person repeat the price so quickly that it felts like he was singing. As professor Singer said, “High technology and high touch.” The screen on the wall show lots of details about the beef they sold, like name of species, the place of production, rating level and so on. You could know the beef very well so that people could estimate the price precisely. However, at the same time the machine they use to move and show the beef is very original and need human to move it. This might because Japanese traditional or they want increase the interaction with customer to increase the “touch” between the people. Government also ask them to sell every piece of meat out to ensure the quality of the product.

Takara Bio, a biomedical company, establish in 2002, but the history could come back to 1979. This is a very international company. The geographic turnover, from 2015 to 2017, the percentage for overseas increase from 24% to 71% and Japan decrease from 76% to 29%. The result shows that company’s profit increased for three times.

And the overseas office even also help them to create more profit than their main company in Japan, because of the low labor cost.

Similar with the previous one, government also play a big role to develop and push hard on genetic cells. The government pass several acts like Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine and Revised Pharmaceutical Affairs Law.

Cancer occupied a big portion of this company’s product. This might because the aging of population in Japan so that the demand to prevent and treat the cancer is increase which influence company to focus a lot on this topic.

The last one is Shinshindo Company, an old company which operate by a whole family. This company is very famous within the Japan. Hajimu Tsuzuki, a MSU alumni, is the third president for this company. To improve the company, Hajimu use lots of methods like dissolved and restructured the company, corporate with other restaurants and hotels. However, this company don’t have any plans about international. Hajimu think the cost to improve international is unpredictable and full of risk.
