Day 10 in Japan (1)

The first station for 5.19 is Tsukiji Fish Market. It is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world and one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind. There are so many types of fishes that I never saw before. The ground is wet and we need to wear the rain boot to enter the market. Even I felt the market is very dirty because of the fishy smelling and lots of water on the ground, manager keep hygiene by using water to wash the ground every day.

As I knew from the Mr. Tsukiji, there is always five percent commotion for the wholesaler no matter how many fish they sold. I think it would be better if wholesaler could have some deduct a percentage from the sum of goods they sold. During the recent years, the most expensive tuna they sold in the auction is 1.5 million dollars in 2012. And the highest selling price for this year is nearly 700 thousand dollars for an entire tuna.

The timeline for this market is like, every day all the sea food would be sold out around 10:00 am, and during 3:00 pm all the fishes which would be sold for the next day would be transported from all over the Japan.

This market is facing a relocation problem. The government has pay for the new place but no want to move their, because all the seller was used to this place and thing they would lose their consumer if they move far away from the Ginza which is one of the most popular commercial street in the world. “This year would be the last time for you to see this market at here.” Professor Singer said she had listened this sentence for three years. No one would know when the seller would agree to move into another new market.

Like the beef auction, it is very hard to find a woman in the tuna auction expect the visitor. When asked them why, the answer is like, “No woman would take part in the tuna action. This place is not very suitable for woman.” Japan has a very specific division for the work. The works which need attention and carefulness have more female employees. But for the works which need more labor have more male employees.

The differential between beef and tuna auction is beef auction is more merchandized and informative, like location and test level, than the tuna auction. The environment for those auction is different too. Tuna auction is more open but beef auction is more close and everything are frozen. And the classifications in the tuna auction are more diversely. For example, there are auctions for live, fresh, freezing and dry fish.
